Fishing With Steve on New Ranger 300 G2
From Captain Juls: Yesterday, March 12th, I took the new Ranger/300 G2 for it’s inaugural test run, before taking any customers out. My friend, Steve, and I hit the launch at Mazurik’s at 7:30am and headed out. There was sunshine at the docks, but as we headed west towards Mouse Island, the fog got thicker and thicker, until we were moving at just above an idle speed. I put the navigation lights in, to help others see my rig, so they wouldn’t run into me. I was amazed how many other boats didn’t do the same. We set lines just west of the ferry crossing, so we didn’t have to worry about getting hit by the ferry as she moved back and forth from Catawba to South Bass Island, since we couldn’t see further than 25 yards at the most. Our program started out with Perfect 10’s run 20/20 and 30/30 with a 1oz snap weight, and Deep Husky Jerks 50-65 back behind Off Shore planer boards, at a speed of 1.0-1.2mph. We picked up three fish there. Then, as the fog began to diss …

Captain Juls: Fishing with Bill and Ryan Quinn
Fishing with Bill and Ryan Quinn 4/28/15 I had high hopes for today’s fishing trip with the Quinn men. They came to town on Saturday night and fished Sunday and Monday in an area I marked on a map for them Sunday morning over coffee and JT’s Cafe doughnuts. I told them the program I had been running previously, and they went out and managed a limit each day. They had a lot of fun, and said it was the best walleye fishing they’ve experienced…ever. Ryan caught one over 30 that he’s having mounted, unless he gets another one that’s bigger by the end of the week. They fish the co angler side of the Pro/Am walleye tournaments…and, they fish Green Bay, Lake Michigan, Winnebago, and many other large bodies of water in Wisconsin and across the country. They are not novice anglers by any means. Today, I felt like one though… Ugh! It was tough today! We launched at 8:30 at Mazurik’s and headed to where they had been fishing the past couple of days and made a couple passes, before …
Fishing with Phil, Joe, and Jason
Fishing with Phil, Joe, and Jason 4/24/15 First, let me apologize for the lateness of this blog entry. I got distracted with a lot of little odds and ends work that needed to get done, and by the time I looked at the clock, it was bedtime. Anyway, the bite was slow for us yesterday. We started out from Mazurik’s and headed to the NW corner of Kelly’s. We set up on the line I had fish on before this blow and picked up three fish, by the time we finished that pass. Everyone on the radio was mentioning how slow it was for them, and struggling to figure out how to make them bite. I figured it would be an afternoon bite, once the water came up a degree or two with the high sunshine yesterday. And, from what I heard, that happened for those in the right areas. The water temps last Saturday were in the high 40’s….and yesterday, it was back down to 45.8 where we were, so it dropped a few degrees with this cold front that is passing through this week. We were runni …
Fishing with Captain Juls: Ken Braho and Family
Ken, Amy, and Tyler had jumped in my boat for the second round of fishing yesterday. They have never trolled with inline planer boards before, so it was a quick lesson setting the baits out with the snap weights and Off Shore boards. Ken’s son Tyler caught on very quickly, and was left to set lines on his side of the boat while I showed Ken and Amy how to do it on their side of the boat. As usual, women only have to be told once how to do something, and Amy had it down pat. Ken, on the other hand, who I would find to be very entertaining throughout the day, needed a more watchful eye. lol (I say that in jest….he did just fine, but was fun to pick on, because he was picking on me!)
World Record Perch
EAGLE, Idaho — Last winter, 12-year-old Tia Wiese and her dad went ice fishing expecting to catch some big fish. The Wiese’s had no idea just how big one of their catches would be. On March 1, 2014, Tia and her dad, Gary, set up on Lake Cascade expecting to catch a yellow perch. Tia’s line went screaming off and the fish got tangled in two other lines. With help from her dad, Tia was able to reel in the giant perch. Gary weighed the fish on his personal scale and knew it was close to a state record. He rushed to Cascade to have her fish weighed on a certified scale where his suspicions were confirmed. “I couldn’t quit smiling,” says Tia. “It was the biggest perch I’ve seen. I was kind of hoping it was a state record.” Tia’s yellow perch weighed in at 2 pounds 11.68 ounces, making it the new state record holder. After visiting the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame in Wisconsin, Gary learned that the world record for yellow perch caught while ice fishing

Walleye Fishing a Major Holiday Surprise
The winter walleye fishing is still luring anglers to the big waters of Lake Erie, where trophy fish are being caught with regularity, especially after the sun goes down. Windy weather had slowed the fishing a little bit, but unseasonable warm weather and southerly winds should provide angling opportunities this weekend. The steelhead trout streams of Northeast Ohio and Steelhead Alley are high and muddy or stained, but are coming down. Weekend anglers will have to search for lightly-stained and clearing waters to find trout willing to bite.
Techie Tools for Me and You
There is no doubt that technology has changed the way we do things and has been a real benefit to the modern angler. Electronic mapping is a big part of the techno mix and has made a ton of information available to those who decide to take advantage. With a highly detailed map and a G.P.S. you can unlock the whereabouts of a secret spot and put yourself right on top of it and hopefully reap some of the benefits. Whether you’re somebody who gets out on the weekend once in a while or a full time tournament angler there are some real advantages to elevating your game.
Guide-Proven Walleye Plays For Early Ice
Legendary walleye guide Tom Neustrom shares strategies for first-ice ‘eyes The venison is neatly wrapped in butcher paper, labeled and squirreled away in the freezer; the orange outfit retired for ice fishing bibs and slip-on cleats. In a perfect world, there’s little snow and good, clean ice is forming throughout the Ice Belt. Whether you call ice fishing’s honeymoon phase “early ice” or “first ice,” one thing is certain: it’s hard to beat, especially for walleyes. Grand Rapids, Minnesota-based guide Tom Neustrom encourages anglers to hit up fall walleye spots during early ice – could be deep, shallow or somewhere in between. Simply, if you caught walleyes there in Oc …
